How to Differentiate Real Pearls from Fake Pearls

  • Real pearls are naturally occurring or cultured, made of layers of nacre.
  • Fake pearls are often made of glass and plastic.

Three key ways to tell them apart:

Observation:
Real pearls have a soft, natural iridescence and may show irregular shapes or growth rings.
Fake pearls are overly shiny, perfectly round, and uniform.

Rubbing:
When rubbed together or against your teeth, real pearls feel slightly gritty.
Fake pearls feel smooth and slippery.

Light Test:
Under strong light, real pearls show a translucent, slightly yellowish hue.
Fake pearls are more transparent and often pure white.

Fake pearls have their place too!

They’re affordable, perfectly shaped, and widely used in designer jewellery.

Choose what suits your budget and style best!
